Effect of Methionine and Ethionine on the Senescence of cut Carnation ¢¥ Desio ¢¥

Abstract
Three levels (10, 1, and 0.1 mM) of methionine or ethionine were applied to preservative solutions in order to investigate the effects of them on the vase life and senescence of cut carnation ¢¥Desio¢¥. According to the longevity of cut flower measured by the appearance of petal¢¥ s tip burn, application of methionine unexpectedly inhibited ethylene production during senescence as well as extended vase life 3 days longer than that of distilled water as control and 2 days longer than that of basal solution containing sucrose and 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate only. On the other hand, ethionine had no effect on extending the vase life of cut carnation despite of its inhibition of ethylene production. As concentrations of both methionine and ethionine increase, the production of ethylene was proportionally inhibited and autocatalytic rise was delayed whereas application of their higher concentrations showed phytotoxicity in flower or stem tissue.
